What is the best way to clean natural sponge? Is it ok to use a mild vinegar solution?

Have just found my natural sponge all gooey and yuk. Someone must have put soap on it over Christmas and not rinsed it after. Have rinsed with warm water but still a bit slimy. Cost a fortune, or so my daughter told me when she brought it back from Greece. I have a vague idea you can use vinegar but no idea why I think that.

I would say vinegar is safe. I would also keep rinsing in warm water.
